Condition of the Working Class critique review
Paper for Engels, ‘Condition of the Working Class.’ https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/download/pdf/condition-working-class-england.pdf Engels wrote this work of journalism as a young man, and before he had developed (with his colleague and collaborator, Karl Marx) a fully developed critique and analysis of industrial capitalism. Some of the development of his later thinking is indicated in the prefaces and introductions to later versions, so be aware of when the different parts of the work were written, if you’re writing about these sections in your paper, and contextualize them accordingly. Write about a six-page analysis of the work, focused on the following elements. If you want to take a somewhat different approach, let me know in advance. There are quite a number of different questions we can ask of this text! 1. What is his research methodology? Consider its strengths and weaknesses, given what you might assume would have been available to him at the time. 2. Why did he write this work? To whom is it addressed? 3. What is his thesis, if he has one? Is he opposed to industrialization? 4. Where does he assign blame for social problems associated with industrialization? Does he explain why these problems occurred? Offer solutions? 5. What do you think is the value of this text to historians seeking to understand the Industrial Revolution? What are its limitations? From what you know, would you assume Engels’ observations might apply to industrialization in the United States (you can make some observations from Licht here)? i.e. in the text- Industrializing America- The nineteenth century by Walter Licht. (P.S. I don’t have access on pdf or to this book, hope you can find it) You may do parenthetical citations, as before. Please use specific examples from the text to support your assertions.
