c) List two (2) things you can do to prevent tooth decay when providing bottles. 1. Clean the baby’s teeth after each bottle-feeding. 2. Do not put liquids that contain sugar in the baby’s feeding bottle. Case Study 2: Jay – 2-months-old Breanna, an educator, is working in the baby’s room with the correct ratio of support staff. There are babies and toddlers ranging in age from 2 months to 18 months. Jay (2 months) arrives with his mother, Sabina. She places him on the play mat that is spread on the floor in a cordoned-off area of the room. When Breanna sees Jay arrive, she goes to welcome Jay and Sabina. Breanna asks how they are, tickling Jay on the tummy and smiling at him. She then helps Sabina put his bag and bottles in the space provided. They chat and laugh about how hard it is to get enough sleep, and then Breanna asks Sabina about the details of the morning. Breanna fills out the parent log with the information that Sabina provides her. (See chart) Sabina gives Jay a kiss on the forehead, says goodbye and goes to leave. Breanna notices that Sabina seems comfortable leaving Jay, who is watching the mobiles above his head. Nevertheless, she reminds Sabina she can call if she wants to check how he is going throughout the day. Soon after Sabina leaves, Breanna notices that Jay has begun to pull faces and wriggle on his mat, sucking on his fist and making jerky movements. She also notices that somewhere in the room there is a smell that indicates a soiled nappy. One of the toddlers starts to cry. At this point, another educator, Akram, comes into the room. Breanna calmly explains the situation in the room and asks Akram to look after Jay as he probably needs to be moved into a different position and given another toy, unless it is his nappy that needs to be changed.
