Boundaries and Multiple Relationships:
Boundary setting is an issue that can present many challenges for the human service professional. Most people choose this profession because they want to help others. However, it can be that very desire that presents the greatest difficulty in setting boundaries. After completing your Reading for this week, please respond to the following questions:
- In your own words, describe and discuss the reasoning behind setting boundaries with clients. Why is this important? Please give an example of a boundary that you, as a human service professional, might need to set. Please list something different than what has been discussed by your classmates. Be sure to describe the particular setting in which this might arise. Why might this be difficult to do?
- Choose one of the five scenarios listed on pages 1 and 2 of the book, Boundary Issues and Dual Relationships in the Human Services, 2nd ed., and discuss how you would handle the situation in an ethical manner.
- What do the NOHS Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals advise about multiple relationships? Be sure to indicate all of the Standards you believe would apply and why.
- Are your responses to the scenario above consistent with the NOHS Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals?
- Review the “Current Overlapping Connections” on page 174. Imagine you are a case manager in your county human services agency. Select one of the statements and discuss how you might respond to your client.
- Discuss some of the difficulties caused by engaging in multiple relationships with clients. Give specific examples. Please provide different examples than have been given by your peers.
