After reading the NASW Code of Ethics and the chapters in the texts regarding social work values and ethics and their relationship with social research ethical standards, consider the following case statement and apply your understanding of ethical issues which need to be considered.

The Lunder Foundation provides mental health services to children and families who live in rural communities. The intervention strategies employed require the social workers to visit with families in their homes and then to help them develop coping strategies to deal with family members who are mentally ill. The Foundation would like to study the effectiveness of the services they provide. They are proposing to ask the social workers who visit the homes to conduct short interviews with the families about their experience with the foundation and the services they provide. They would like to use this information to inform future services they may provide to the communities.

In your response, address the following:

  • The foundation has asked you to describe any ethical issues regarding the study design and the interaction with families.
  • The foundation asks that you offer a recommendation as to whether this study should proceed and/or what changes to the study design would be required in order for this study to proceed.
