This idea is called “American exceptionalism.” The thinking goes that because we Americans are exceptional, we have a right, even a duty, to impose our systems and values – cultural, political, or even religious – onto others. To what extent, if any, do you believe this is true? Does America have such a role in the world? Think of recent events such as “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” Does the US conduct it’s role in the Middle East and other places under the banner of benevolence or self interest? How do this week’s documents speak to the issue of US imperialism? How does the author and cartoonist view America’s new role abroad?
