Analysis of argument: Letter from Birmingham Jail

Directions: * Read carefully and critically Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” Annotating the text will help you with your task of analyzing the argument. * Write a 2-1/2 to 3 page essay that addresses one of the writing purposes: Option 1: Write a rhetorical analysis of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” that analyzes the Aristotelian appeals (logos, pathos, and ethos) that also discusses audience and kinds of evidence used in the work. Was it friendly, neutral, or hostile? As you discuss each appeal and kind of evidence, be sure to analyze why King includes this specific kind of evidence to address his audiences.

 Option 2: Write a rhetorical analysis of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” that analyzes the stylistic writing techniques and King’s audience. As you discuss each stylistic technique, be sure to analyze why King employs the technique. * Your thesis for this essay should appropriately identify your essay as an analysis for one of the above options. * Introduce the author and title of the work in the beginning of your essay, but refer to the author’s last name after initial introduction. * Provide specific examples (quotes and paraphrases) from the text to support your analysis and remember to correctly cite using MLA documentation. Include in-text citation and a Works Cited. * Follow MLA format throughout your essay, using size 12 Arial or Times New Roman font with 1” margins and double spacing throughout the essay and Works Cited. * Use present tense verbs when responding to literature (including argumentative essays).
