Choose a contemporary “secular” phenomenon and discuss the extent to which it can be construed as religious in some way. Examples of “contemporary phenomena” could include fan organizations, band groupies, cults, yoga, “raves,” ritual use of psychotropic drugs, Alcoholics Anonymous, “mindfulness,” political parties or ideologies, nationalism, capitalism, technology, fraternities or sororities, and secluded meditation practice, to name a few. Your discussion should briefly describe the phenomenon, and then use the ideas of at least three theorists we have read in class to consider the religious-ness or non-religiousness of that phenomenon. Please think of this assignment as an opportunity to engage in creative interpretations of social movements not usually understood as religious as such. Length: 5-7 pages. Formatting: Your paper should be typed, double spaced, 12-point Times or comparable font, with 1-inch margins, and include a “works cited” page. Please give your essay a title (creative or especially engaging titles are appreciated).
