As discussed in the Robbins and Kelley essays, list all the factors that shape one’s personal identity. Which of these factors were the key influences shaping your sense of self and personhood, and explain how they influenced you. This is a 2-part question: Provide a concrete example (each) to show how: (a) language and gender combine to shape one’s identity, and (b) how spending money is used to either “project” one’s sense of identity to others, or is used to “read” someone’s identity. This is a 3-part question based on the Kelley essay: Carefully explain, specifically and fully, how hair, race, and gender combined to shape Kelley’s identity (a) before the haircut, and (b) after he shaved his head. Finally, (c) do you think his sense of self changed?, was the change only in how people perceived him?, or was the change a combination of his perceptions of himself and others’ perceptions of him? (carefully explain your reasoning). Describe in detail only one (1) of the following symbolic actions: (a) potlach, or (b) kula ring, or (c) “making moka.” Next, specifically explain how identity and status are earned by participating in that symbolic action. (and know where these cultures are on your map!) In your own words (not off some website!), what is phallocentrism? Describe a concrete example of phallocentrism practiced in the U.S. (N.B. phallocentrism is not the same as sexism – it’s much more!)
