In this assignment, you’ll have the chance to conduct field work in your local community. Your overall task is to assess how food secure your local community is. Part One: Gathering Data The first step in this field study is to gather all of the data you will need in your analysis. Some of the data you will be able to find online or at the public library. You will also need to take a walking tour of your town or neighbourhood to count the number of grocery stores, convenient stores and fast food locations. You will need to collect the following information. Population of your town or neighbourhood. Geographical size of your town or neighbourhood (square kilometers or city blocks). Number of grocery stores in your town or neighbourhood Number of convenient stores in your town or neighbourhood Number of fast food restaurants in your town or neighbourhood Select four healthy products (one from each category of the food guide) and determine how much they cost at a local grocery store. Part Two: Analyze the Data The focus of this section of your study is to analyze the data that you collected about food security in your town or neighbourhood is. You will need to evaluate the data you have collected according to two different categories: Geographical Analysis: How far must the people in your town or neighbourhood travel for healthy food? Are there specific sections of your town or neighbourhood that are located particularly far away from grocery stores? Economic Analysis: How affordable are the grocery stores in your community? Is the average person living in your town or neighbourhood able to afford shopping at the local grocery store? Part Three: Make Recommendations Based on the analysis you completed in Part Two, make at least five recommendations to your town council about food security in your community. Perhaps there needs to be new grocery stores located in priority areas. Perhaps the grocery stores that are located in your area need to offer healthier or more affordable options. Part Four: Communicate Your Results Communicate the results of your field study in a written report. Your report should include the headings below. Introduction. Data Gathered. Analysis of Data (Geographical Analysis, Economic Analysis). Recommendations. References. Visual Aids such as a map to illustrate the location of stores and restaurants or charts to illustrate food costs or income levels are not required but would strengthen your report significantly.
