Essays should NOT be a mere regurgitation of the assigned reading or the lectures; rather, the essays should demonstrate analytical, critical thinking, and comprehension of the content. A Structure, especially a good logical structure, is one of the most important elements of writing essays. There are three major elements of structure, an introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion. Normally, you should have at least 3 body paragraphs that support your thesis. You should begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence stating your argument or sub-thesis for that paragraph because for each paragraph you should be focusing on one issue or topic that supports the main thesis. Every sentence in the essay should support the thesis, that is, if it is not relevant to thesis, don’t say it. In each paragraph, each point you make should support your topic sentence, which supports your main thesis.
