Short Answer Assignment Directions: Each student is required to respond to each question as thoroughly as possible, evidencing that you have read and interpreted the reading(s) that address the questions. Each response should be at least one to two paragraphs for a total of ten to fourteen sentences minimum. Try to answer each question in the order in which it is given and to the best of your ability. Be thorough and creative! The total assignment should span between two (2) and four (4) typed double-spaced pages and should be written in Times New Roman 12-point font within 1-inch margins; while I have given the page range as a guideline, I am more concerned with the quality of the work instead of the quantity. So do your best. Be sure to write everything in your OWN WORDS. If you take sentences from the readings, place quotations around the sentences or phrases. If you need help writing, I can direct you to resources on campus. Get the help that you need to be a great student! 1.Compare and discuss the monogenetic and polygenetics theories concerning the origins of humanity, according to the Diop film and Dr. yefru’s chapter one. Where is the geographic origin of homosapiens and how did humanity populate the earth? Why is this information important for African Americans in light of how Europe has negatively defined African people, history, culture and creativity, according to our readings from last week? For full credit you must evidence the distinctions between monogenetic and polygenetic and the importance of these terms in thinking about the origins of humanity from the course materials. Again, evidence Diop’s film, Yefru’s Chapter One and the Diop PowerPoint. 2. Using chapter two in Yefru’s book, describe in your own words how the Paleolithic homosapiens became the Neolithic homosapiens. What is the date and geographic location for the start of the Paleolithic period and what is the time frame (dates) for the specific transition from Paleolithic to the Neolithic periods. What were differences between their modes of living? Finally, what is the role of the Nile River in this transition? Why is this discussion important for African Americans in the twenty-first century? You may use an internet dictionary to define the terms paleolithic and neolithic as part of the answer to this question. Do not copy and paste from the internet; place these definitions in quotations or in your own words. 3.Using the lecture notes, the PowerPoint, and the worldview chart, describe in your own words, Diop’s two cradle theory. First, using the PowerPoint link, describe who Cheikh Anta Diop is. If you use other resources, place sentences or phrases lifted from the source about Diop in quotes. Second, using lecture notes, the PowerPoint on Diop’s Two Cradle Theory, the worldview chart in particular and Kambon’s article, explain the development of the African and European worldviews according to Diop’s Two Cradle Theory. For full credit you must define the characteristics of the worldview and discuss the climatic features that influence the psychological state of human development according to Diop and Kambon. Why is this discussion important for African Americans in the twenty-first century? 4. What is the thesis of Kambon’s article and what evidence does he provide to prove his point? What ways do you as an African American living under white supremacy participate in behaviors attributed to the European Worldview in America. For full credit you must evidence examples from the full discussion of Kambon’s ideas on the manifestations of the European Worldview in American culture. Why, then, is this discussion important for African Americans in the twenty-first century? 5. Using Chapter two, describe the Badarians who resided in Upper Kemet during the Neolithic periods? What were the physical characteristics of the Badarians? According to Yefru, what were they the first to believe and why? In other words, describe their culture and how old this culture is. What can we conclude about the phenotype and culture of the inhabitants of the Nile Valley? Be sure to identify the location of the Badarians. Again, why is this discussion important for African Americans? 6.Using Chapter three, discuss the origins of the Kemetic calendar and how does it become the Gregorian calendar that we use here in the West? For full credit describe the role of the Nile in the creation of the calendar. What are the three seasons and how do they relate to the Nile? Why is this important information for African Americans in light of our course work thus far?
