Watch this brief video defining Complementary and Alternative Medicine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZX_gpNwoJU Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has never been more popular. Nearly 40 percent of adults report using CAM (Mayo Clinic, 2014). Doctors are embracing CAM therapies, too, often combining them with mainstream medical therapies – spawning the term “integrative medicine.” To make sense of the many therapies available, it helps to look at how they are classified by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH): Whole medical systems Mind-body medicine Biologically based practices Manipulative and body-based practices Energy medicine Many national organizations of diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma offer options for CAM therapies. You can read about those from the links below: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/Treating-MS/Complementary-Alternative-Medicines http://www.lls.org/treatment/integrative-medicine-and-complementary-and-alternative-therapies/types-of-cam-therapies First, define complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy. Next, you are to locate and participate in at least two different CAM modalities. These may include techniques such as therapeutic massage, chiropractic medicine, aromatherapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, etc. Take this opportunity to experience new things (i.e. don’t just choose whatever is easiest or most convienent). If you currently practice CAM, you are to choose modalities that are new to you. Describe your experiences and give your opinion on the efficacy of CAM therapy- in general, and also specific to your experiences. Using evidence from scholarly research, provide both support and opposition for CAM therapy. Are there current trends in the hospital sector increasing the number and types of CAM offered?
