Discussion Question 1: Outstanding HRD Functions

FIRST, watch Human Resource Management: An Overview video at the following link:

Human Resources Management: An Overview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epTSz2SB8X0&feature=youtu.be)

THEN, go to the website for the American Society for Training and Development (ATSD) at  www.astd.org and use the website’s Search function to explore the information about companies that were given the “BEST Award” in the most recent year available.

For your main discussion question response:

  • Considering the information in the readings, video, and ASTD website, identify three key characteristics that would make an HRD function truly “ world class”. Describe the reasons why these particular characteristics are so critical.
  • Relate your point of view to experiences you have had with specific companies (e.g., as a customer or as an employee). For each of the three characteristics, describe specific ways in which it translates into something tangible. For example, if you have been lucky enough to have had a well-trained customer service representative work with you in resolving a problem, you can identify how that person showed knowledge and skills, and describe the result.

THEN, prepare a PowerPoint presentation that provides a full description of that organization’s HRD strategy and programs. Be sure to address the following questions:

  • What types of training and development programs are offered?
  • How do program components and overall approach contribute to the company’s success?
  • How much is spent on training per employee during a typical year? How does this compare with other, similar companies?
  • Why do you think that this company made the Fortune list?
  • Do you think that this company would be one of the best to work for? Why or why not?
