Cookbooks have long been a popular medium for keeping and sharing food-related knowledge and cultural traditions. Cookbooks are also increasingly viewed as effective media for educating people about food and diet-related issues and causes, promoting health, or even creating social change. These cookbooks often provide social commentary, advice, educational pieces, or even critical analysis alongside the recipes. Indeed, some cookbooks have been reimagined as guidebooks where the recipes do not provide instructions on how to prepare dishes at all. Rather, the recipes provide ideas, instructions, or actions designed to effect social change, or inculcate critical awareness in relation to an issue. From this perspective, recipes can be conceptualized more broadly as a set of instructions to create or do almost anything. For this project, students will create their own cookbook which provides critical research-based analysis alongside recipes related to a specific food-related health issue. The recipes, whatever they may be, should creatively exemplify, put into action, or demonstrate in practice, some aspect or aspects of the analysis of the food-related health issue. For example your cookbook can be “How to be a Vegan” The Critical Cookbook Project will involve the following components: • Title Page: a visually-engaging cover for the cookbook which includes the title of the cookbook, along with the student’s name, student number, course title and code, and the assignment due date. • Research-Based Analysis: 4 pages of analysis of the food-based health issue that clearly explains the issue and its significance, supported by high-quality research. At least 3 course sources and 3 non-course sources must be used to support the analysis. • Recipes: at least 4 ‘recipes’ that creatively exemplify, illustrate, or put into practice some aspect of the researchbased analysis. The recipes may be placed in a section separate from the analysis, or they may be interspersed within the analysis. (1 page) • Bibliography: An APA-formatted bibliography listing all sources cited within the cookbook.
