Steps in completing the project: Choose an organization that has been in the news in the last three or less years because of innovative products or services, mergers or acquisitions, business decisions, lawsuits, criminal activity, etc. Sample companies and news stories are provided below. Evaluate the organization using at least three of the topics from our course shown below. This evaluation requires that you use a number of sources. In addition to your text, I would expect to see at least eight sources of information/evidence listed in your reference section. While information may be obtained from various points on the organization’s website, the organization itself is only ONE source of information. This is a research project and the expectation is that you extensively research the organization. Ethics and social responsibility. Example research questions: Is there evidence of workplace deviance? What level of moral development does the organization’s actions appear to represent? In what ways (and to whom) is the organization socially responsible? Organizational environment and culture. Example research questions: How effectively does the organization interact with the environment? Has the organization been responsive to the environment? What type of culture has the organization created or maintained? What evidence can you provide to support your conclusions? Planning and decision making. Example research questions: What kinds of plans are used by the company? What is the mission statement? Vision statement? How do these appear to impact organizational actions? Designing adaptive systems. Example research questions: What kind of structure is used by the organization? Is the structure positively or negatively influencing organizational performance? Is the organization mechanistic or organic? Has there been recent reengineering or empowerment effort? Human resource systems. Example research questions: Has the organization been sued by employees or employee advocates? What federal or state laws were violated? Has the organization been accused of sexual harassment or racial discrimination? What process does the organization use for recruiting, selection, training, performance appraisal, and employee separation? Managing diversity. Example research questions: How diverse is the organization? Which diversity paradigm does the organization seem to use? What kinds of diversity initiatives (such as training) are used? What effect do these initiatives have on the organization? Leadership. Example research questions: What leadership behaviors are exhibited by the senior leadership of the organization (e.g., CEO, COO, etc.)? How have the leadership behaviors used by top management affected organizational performance (market share, ROI, ROE, etc.), employee satisfaction, employee performance, etc.? Paper content. The paper must include the following sections: Introduction. Describe the news story that prompted your interest in the company. Provide an overview of the company – founders, industry, how long has it been in business, number of employees, etc. This information should be summarized in the introduction. Details should be placed in a table that I may find in the appendix. (1-2 pages) Analysis based on course information. Use the research questions provided above or craft your own research questions based on course information. Provide evidence supporting conclusions from the research you conduct. For example, you might write: “Techtron is a leader in diversity management within the technology industry. They subscribe to the learning and effectiveness which focuses on “integrating deep-level diversity differences, such as personality, attitudes, beliefs and values, into the actual work of the organization” (Williams, 2013, p. 263). This can be seen through their focus on xxx (citation). Yet there are people within the tech world who have launched complaints about how Techtron handles gender diversity. For example, xxxx (citation). Taken together, we conclude xxx.” (6-8 pages) Discussion of management. In this section, discuss what you’ve learned about management from this exploration. In 2-3 pages, please answer the following questions: What is “management” from your team’s perspective? Is the definition provided by our text adequate or inadequate to describe the scope of management activities undertaken by these organizations? Does management matter? How does it matter? Does this organization add to or detract from human and planetary well-being? Why do you take this position? What are the implications of how this company is run for different stakeholder groups? Choose 2-3 different stakeholder groups that may be juxtaposed. Reference section. In this section, cite all the sources used to construct your paper. APA format must be correctly used. Presenting the Assignment: Assignment Length. This assignment must be 10-13 double spaced pages. I will cease reading when I reach the end of 12 pages. Assignment Format.
