Essay question: Critically analyse how external factors influence how an organisation health and safety , and how a failing organisation can be turned around using all appropriate mechanism of state intervention. Resources: Module handbook attached with he marking criteria of the course work , which you should use. Lecture 1 to 5 attached guidance: Guidance: The essay can be seen as 2 parts of a whole. The first part is what external factors influence safety performance. There are many so you may wish to provide a point in the essay to articulate them all but then select, based on argument and evidence, those that you think have greatest influence. Do consider if these are the same for all industries, sectors and settings. One of the obvious influences is legislation, compliance behaviour and regulatory responses. Think internationally here to get a view as to how state actors role, power and influence differs. But also available sanctions (fines in UK versus others), corp manslaughter (but issues etc). Regulator behaviour and govt direction ie enterprise is good, EMM, FFI etc. but also make sure you mention the intervention options (UK) The other part need to look at the way in which companies respond and mitigate these factors. ie if not doing well which of the factors make me change and how. This then leads onto the safety culture argument (this does not have to be a core focal point with lots of words…but needs to be there…and how this is made real to respond to the factors you raise). hope that this helps
