NSTRUCTIONS: At this point in the course, you should have begun to think about how culture produces very different worldviews, perspectives, and lifestyles around the world. Take a few minutes to think about culture shock and cultural conflict. One of the areas where cultural conflict occurs is that of gender and sexual orientation. In recent years, the US has seen a number of legislative battles over the rights of LBGTQ individuals, including issues of access to public restrooms and marriage. There is a significant conflict between those “for” and those “against” these rights. It’s not just a political conflict. It’s a cultural one. Consider that when asked about being a representative of Black communities, Busta Rhymes stated that he thought he was. Then, when asked about gay, Black hip hop artists and if they would be welcomed in the hip hop community, Busta Rhymes said he couldn’t even talk about that because “the community I represent… they don’t condone that” (Hip Hop Beyond Beats and Rhymes). For Response Paper 3, answer the following prompt: Discuss the cultural reasons why a conflict over gender and sexual orientation exists in the United States. Don’t forget to refer to the readings and use an anthropological mindset in your answer.
