For your first (position) paper assignment, students are expected to uncover a current policy or practice (anything from the 80s – present day) in the American Corrections System that relates to race, class or gender. Following this, each student must take a position, using proper academic articles (at least 3) and class discussion, arguing “for” or “against” their specific policy/practice. Included should be a historical framework leading up to this policy (brief), what types of punishment this policy uses (5 goals), debate exemplifying both sides of the argument (using academic evidence, not your own opinions), and any further corrections/legislative policies/practices implemented in the aftermath.
