As an emergency manager it is important that you have background understanding and knowledge of the declaration process for obtaining federal assistance if an incident overwhelms local, state and tribal resources. Though we may only hear of significant catastrophes or emergencies in the news, there have been literally thousands of declarations issued since federal emergency management legislation has been enacted. Review the FEMA Disaster Declarations Website (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and take some time to see how the declarations are categorized. Choose one of the declarations from the either the Emergency or Major Disaster Declaration selections (it does not matter which year, state, territory or tribe you choose). Conduct some additional background research (related news articles, etc.) Post a discussion comment describing the type of emergency or disaster that generated the declaration request and whether there were any points of contention or controversy surrounding the declaration request. Include your personal assessment of whether there were any similarities to what was raised by the author of the “Political Disaster” paper, or the similar section of your readings in the text.
