Do you think Andrew Jackson’s election and presidency represented democratic principles or did he merely used democratic rhetoric for self-interests?
In lieu of class meeting on the Jacksonian Era, you will be expected to review the Prezi lecture material which is accessible through Canvas, read the assigned materials, and form a response essay. This essay should be more in depth and should have accompanying evidence from the readings and the Prezi that not only support YOUR thoughts, but also reflect your understanding of the assigned materials. The specifics: Review the Prezi and read an assessment of Jackson’s Presidency at the link entitled, “Impact and Legacy of President Andrew Jackson.” Then read some of the first hand accounts of the Cherokee removal, resulting in the Trail of Tears at the “Human Impact of Removal” link. Lastly, read the article “Democracy and Jackson.” Keep in mind the questions posed at the end of the article and think about the ideas of democracy. After reading these materials, please form well-thought out academic response essay addressing the following question: Do you think Andrew Jackson’s election and presidency represented democratic principles or did he merely used democratic rhetoric for self-interests? Address your assessment of Jackson’s presidency as well. Was he a “good” or “great” president? Why or why not. And, lastly, please try to make connections to the relevance of Jackson’s presidency to today’s democratic process, the ideas of democracy, and perhaps recent gubernatorial and/or presidential administrations, particularly in your conclusion. You response should also contain direct evidence from the readings with appropriate citations. This response should be about 4 pages, typed, 12 point font, double spaced. Submit via the Canvas dropbox by the assigned due date.
