During the first year of life, what are appropriate foods and beverages to serve to an infant? Are there any foods or beverages that should be avoided during this time?

The appropriate foods and beverages to serve an infant during the first year of life include iron fortified infant cereal, strained fruits and vegetables, or mashed and chopped fruits and vegetables.  Some foods that should be avoided during this time are honey because it is known to cause botulism in infants.  Other foods are those considered to be highly allergic such as fish and nuts.  Additional salt should not be added to infant’s baby food, and sleeping with a bottle should also be avoided to decrease  possible tooth decay.
