Finally, with his army on the verge of starvation and cornered by superior forces near Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865, General Robert E. Lee agreed to meet with General Ulysses S. Grant to discuss surrender terms. General Grant wrote his memoirs of these campaigns in his, The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, a sparse, factual description of battles, terrain, and maneuvers between battles from his point of view as the field commander of Union forces. Explain how Lee’s fanaticism and Grant’s generosity affected them, their armies and their respective civilian populations. Include details about the surrender; included in the memoirs and presented in the documentary, help to explain how history would remember the two men and how people in North and South would remember the 4-year struggle.
