Instructions for Final Essay: Identify a particular job related to your program. Please describe a particular ethical issue, conflict, or dilemma that may arise for someone working in that field (for example, nursing students may find it useful to focus on abortion or euthanasia). Discuss how the issue, conflict, or dilemma would be addressed by supporters of two of the following ethical theories: utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, or virtue ethics. As part of your answer, you should give a detailed discussion of the ethical theories in question. Please argue your case in a clear, thoughtful, well-written, and well-organized fashion. Please use class texts and class notes to support your claims. In addition, please use at least one original source not assigned in class. This original source must be a paper source (such as a book or newspaper) accessed through non-electronic means, and it should make a useful contribution to your essay. You may also use as many additional sources (including electronic sources) as you like, but you must list all of your sources in your bibliography and in your references. Students must receive a grade of at least 60% on this assignment if they are to pass the course (this is a rule imposed by the college). If the student does not pass this assignment, the maximum grade the student can receive for the course is 50% (again, this is a rule imposed by the college). Please make sure to provide a bibliography and to list your references in the form of footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical notes. You should cite all of your sources even when you’re not quoting directly from a text (essays that fail to do this may be charged with plagiarism). When citing information you’ve learned from class, please cite “Class Notes” in your references and list the course in your Bibliography. When handing in their essays, students are expected to sign and to hand in a form declaring that they have not plagiarized and that they have referenced their sources properly. Essays that are not accompanied by such signed forms will not be graded. Due date for Final Essays: The “official” due date for this essay is Wednesday, May 9th, but students may hand in their essays until Thursday May 17th at 6:00pm without a late penalty. Students should feel perfectly free to hand in their essays on Thursday, May 17th. Students may also hand in their essay on Friday, May 18th with a 2% late penalty, Monday, May 21st with a 4% late penalty, or Tuesday, May 22nd with a 6% late penalty. The instructor may refuse to accept assignments after Tuesday, the 22nd of May. For purposes of late penalties, essays handed in after 6:00pm may be considered as having been submitted on the subsequent day. Essays may be submitted either in class or in my office (5D.15). If you submit your essay in my office when no one is there, please place the assignment in an envelope with my name on it and slide the envelope under the office door. Recommended Length of Final Essay: 1400 to 1600 words (students may go over 1600 words if they wish, but it is not recommended that they write essays below 1400 words in length). Please remember to double-space your Final Essay. Essay Proposal Before writing their essays, students must first hand in an Essay Proposal to the instructor. The Essay Proposal must consist of at least three parts: An introductory paragraph in which students describe their general topic. An essay outline with a sentence or two about each paragraph in the proposed essay. This essay outline must also include a proposed thesis statement. The essay outline may be written in point form. Please note that the body of the Final Essay should have more than three paragraphs (I mention this only because some students were mistakenly taught by their high school teachers that all essays should consist of three main paragraphs or should make three main points). Please also note that students will not necessarily be expected to stick to their essay outline once they actually write their essays. A good essay outline should nonetheless be of great help in writing a strong essay, even if students choose to make some changes from their original outline. A bibliography with a list of sources. There should be at least one original paper source in the bibliography of the Essay Proposal as well as in the bibliography of the Final Essay (a paper source is a source such as a book, newspaper, or magazine accessed through non-electronic means, and an original source is a source not assigned for this course). Students may, of course, use other sources (including electronic sources and sources that were assigned in the course) in addition to this original paper source. Students should not, however, use Wikipedia as a source for the Essay Proposal or Final Essay. Due Date for Essay Proposal: Wednesay, April 25th at 6:00pm(but students are encouraged to hand in their proposals before that date if possible). Essay proposals may be submitted in class or in my office (5D.15). Minimum Length for Essay Proposal: There is no minimum or maximum length. The Essay Proposals will be graded according to how much work students appear to have put into them. Essay Proposals that appear to have been written in half an hour are likely to receive a failing grade; Essay Proposals that are carefully thought out and well written are likely to receive high grades.
