By the time you begin this assignment you should have a clear understanding of the components of a food system, beginning with the primary production of commodities through to the ultimate consumption of food products by consumers. It is my hope that you also realize that food systems function in the context of specific environments which both shape food systems and, in turn, are shaped by them. I also expect you to appreciate that the actual outputs of a food system are more than just food products. Specifically, in addition to the impacts on nutrition and health food systems also produce and sustain livelihoods and can foster or retard social cohesion and progress. For example, while food systems can create incomes and employment opportunities, promote economic growth and generate wealth – at least for some- changing food systems can also put people out of work and marginalize them. Taken together, the Nutritional and Health Outcomes, the Environmental Outcomes, and the Socio-economic Outcomes of a given Food System have enormous impacts on a society.
