Used correctly, heuristics can aid managers in decision making, particularly when decisions need to be made quickly. Bazerman and Moore (2013) focus on four types of heuristics, often found in decision-making literature. • The availability heuristic is used when managers base decisions on events that are available in our memory. In other words, experiences can influence the decisions made. • The representativeness heuristic is used when managers make predictions of events or outcomes based on “an established category of people that the individual represents for them” (Bazerman & Moore, 2013, p. 8). • The confirmation heuristic is used when managers focus on using selective data. When using a confirmation heuristic, a manager may focus on only one cause of a problem rather than carefully exploring all possible causes. • The affect heuristic is used when managers fail to base their decisions on analysis and reasoning and instead are influenced by emotions and moods.
