By the time of Caesar’s assassination, Rome had already seen two civil wars–Sulla and Marius; and Caesar and Pompey. There was great concern that the power vacuum left by Caesar’s death would lead to yet another civil war (and, eventually, it did). But, in the days following the assassination, there was a great effort by the Roman Senate to avoid such an outcome. How did the assassins as well as Caesar’s supporters manage to avoid the total collapse of Rome into chaos in the days following Caesar’s murder? What specific steps did the senate take to try to restore order and prevent further violence? Why was a temporary peace achieved, with the apparent restoration of Republican law and liberty? In making your case, be sure to cite specific evidence from the book (The Throne of Caesar by Steven Saylor) or other sources on the aftermath of Caesar’s assassination (no extra research required, however!). Note the specific actions that the senate took in handling these very difficult days; and how those actions led to a postponement, at least, of further violence. How were the assassins protected? How were Caesar’s supporters appeased? Please respond to this prompt with a clearly written and argued essay of c. 500 words. Be sure to support any assertions with evidence.
