How does it increase women’s vulnerabilities?

As noted by gender scholars, violence against women continues to be a global problem.

NEED RESPONSE TO THIS RESPONSE:

Response: The criminal justice system in South Africa perpetuates gender inequality because of the preservation and patriarchal values and behaviors within the community. The responsiveness of the criminal justice system along with the exposure to violence in the mass media helps create a climate in which violence is encouraged. At the beginning of the video, a woman by the name of Sophia Boyers said, “I ran down to the police station at 3 a.m. because my husband beat me up and when I got to the police station I filed a charge against him and the policeman told me I can arrest your husband in exchange for sex.” This is an example of why I believe the criminal justice system increases women’s vulnerabilities. They feel alone. Women in South Africa have a lack of faith when it come to the justice system. The violence that many of these women experience not only increases vulnerability but also limits access to legal redress. Women of the community need to have a sense of confidence in the justice system before they are willing to report these crimes. “The lack of investigation, follow through, legal protection, inadequate training” shows that victims are not confident in the justice system. The police even are not sensitive to their situations. I personally believe they can’t be sensitive to the nature of these crimes. If members of the police force are also drawn from the same society, how can you teach them to be gender sensitive?
