In this assignment, you are required to submit a typed, double-spaced paper, 1-2 pages in length. This paper is a coaches “shortlist” of ideas and motivational tools to help your athletes succeed. This paper is different than your mental training plan paper in that it is an outline of very specific actions that you will take to ensure your athletes will gain a competitive edge over their opponents. The purpose of this assignment is to “develop a shortlist” of ideas and actions that will allow you as a coach to list your motivational tools for individual or team success. Motivation is the fuel for an athlete’s performance. Performance is directly related to the intensity of motivation; it is the psychological force that drives us to perform well. It gives athletes a purpose to participate in sport. Clearly, your athletes possess different levels of motivation. The first part of motivation, direction, shows us that some athletes are motivated by success, while others are motivated by fear of failure. Intensity, the second element of motivation, has to do with the control an athlete feels over a situation. Athletes vary in their intensity from low to extremely intense. Your bullet points will be directly related to the group of people and their behaviors that you coach or wish to work with in the future. Other considerations include motivational patterns, the perfectionist athlete, learned effectiveness, which are terms described in the “Coaching Mental Excellence” book. Refer to both text books for this assignment. In this paper, you will write a short introduction about Motivation and your experiences with either motivated athletes or those that are lacking in motivation or desire to excel in their sport. After the introduction, you write: I promise to help my athletes succeed by increasing their motivation through the following action plan: After at least 10 bullet points, you will write a brief conclusion explaining why your plan will help push your athletes over the top and gain a competitive edge on their opponents. In your examples, be sure to be specific. Be creative! Imagine yourself pumping up your athletes to achieve their goals! Remember, you will be coaching a diverse group of people. Try to be inclusive with your approach!
