Identify and discuss key issues and problems related to the fit between the organization’s current (implied or stated) business strategy and its (implied or stated) HR strategic plan and practices.
Your response needs to address whether or not the HR strategic plan is supporting the organization’s business plan. If it is not, what problems have arisen (e.g. excessive turnover, poor management style, low quality product/service, low morale, poor communication etc.). You will need to identify what strategy you believe the organization is pursuing (defender, prospector, analyzer, or reactor) and whether or not the human resources strategy supports that strategy. If the organization is a reactor, you will need to identify which strategy you believe the organization should adopt. Recommend which strategic approach you believe they should take (defender, analyzer or prospector) and then build your strategic HR plan on that basis. Remember that the focus of the analysis is on building an HR strategy, not a business strategy.
You will need to list any stated or implied HR strengths and weaknesses. HR strengths are and should be where the HR plan fits with the organization’s missions, goals, objectives and strategy. HR weaknesses are and should be any issues and problems in the HR plan that do not fit the organization’s mission, goals, objectives and strategy. In other words, state the HR activity and discuss why it fits and the benefits, or why it does not fit and the problems that are being caused.
As the question states, you may have to imply either one or both of the business strategy and the HR strategy. Clearly state any assumptions that you are making about these strategies. Do not address how you will fix the problems in this section; that will comprise your discussion in question 2.
Also discuss why you believe HR does not have a strategy that supports the business strategy. Why has this happened and why has it been allowed to continue?
