A patient who has been on the organ transplant list for years awaiting a kidney donation is declining clinically.  Family members were tested and none were suitable as a donor match. The patient’s spouse advertised on social media seeking a potential organ donor. When the donor was identified the patient’s spouse agreed to reimburse the potential donor secretively. As the RN was preparing the patient identified as the kidney organ donor for surgery, the donor stated, “I am so happy to be able to donate my kidney. I know this person has been waiting a long time and now my child’s college education is funded.”

Initial Discussion Post:

Address the following:

  • Identify at least two (2) ethical principles involved in this situation.
  • Is it acceptable for the RN to ignore the donor’s comment? What should the RN do in this situation?  Refer to your textbooks and the 2015 ANA Code of Ethics to provide a rationale that goes beyond your personal opinion.
  • Are there statements in the 2015 American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics that may help resolve this dilemma? Explain your response. the LPN to RN transitions (Harrington & Terry, 2013) textbook: 250 words please
