Understand the purpose of a strategic plan 1.1 Identify the organisational strategic aims and objectives In this section you are asked to identify the organisational strategic aims and objectives. It would be useful to use your organisation or one with which you are familiar. You could explore the different approaches to strategy, for example; emergent and deliberate strategies (Mintzberg) and also the Resource Based View (RBV) of the Firm (Grant). At this level it would not be sufficient to rely for example, upon reference to SMART objectives alone. 1.2 Assess the impact of stakeholder expectations on a strategic plan In assessing the impact of stakeholder expectations on a strategic plan you could comment on the strategic purpose of the organisation and how this might be influenced by stakeholders. Without assessing stakeholder expectation, it could be more difficult to define the values, vision and mission accurately. You might also include: Deciding how much an organisation might consider stakeholders based upon the way they can impact the strategy through their power and approval (or disapproval) Prioritising and managing them in order to develop your strategy without conflict. 1.3 Determine the alternative strategic options available Stakeholders can be extensive – Freeman, but can also include: Generic types of stakeholders – Johnson and Scholes Stakeholder mapping / Power/interest matrix – Johnson, Whittington and Scholes
