Imagine that you are assigned to care for a pregnant client, 15 years old, who comes to the health care facility in true labor. She is accompanied by her 18-year-old sister. This is the client’s first pregnancy and she has had very little antepartal care. Her contractions are occurring every 6 minutes and lasting about 40 seconds. Her cervix is 30% effaced. She is visibly anxious and irritable and says, “I can’t stand this pain. It’s terrible.” Assessment reveals that the client’s labor is progressing and maternal and fetal statuses are within acceptable parameters.

a. What factor(s) do you think might be contributing to the client’s current state?

b. How would you plan to intervene?

c. What are the differences with true and false labor?
