This module introduces students to Proteins and their dietary implications. You will examine the important functions protein plays and health implications for the various types of proteins you select from the foods you consume. This module also discusses the “super powers” of micronutrients, which include vitamins and minerals, They are needed in smaller amounts than the macronutrients carbohydrates, fats, and proteins but still have vital functions in the body. Module 4 Written Assignment Part 1: Protein State the recommendations for dietary intake of protein. Explain the potential consequence of eating too much or too little protein. Discuss the populations/times when more protein is recommended. Looking back at your Nutrient Analysis from the Food Tracker, calculate the recommended amount of protein you should be consuming (range from 10-35%), discuss your protein intake and how it compares to the recommended amounts. Do you think you should be consuming the higher end of the range (based upon your activity level, lifestyle and healing status)? Describe ways you can increase/decrease/improve your protein consumption in your diet. (Be specific) Research information on one protein supplements marketed to body builders or for weight loss. Evaluate the safety of this supplement. How does the cost of this supplement compare with the cost of common food sources of protein? With adequate support from the textbook and/or internet, explain your opinion on high protein eating plans and its effects on weight loss. Part 2: Vitamins & Minerals Go back and look at your Nutrient Analysis intake form and see which vitamins and minerals you are deficient or low in intake. Using the information you read in your text and web readings: Do you think you are a candidate for a vitamin /mineral supplement? Why or why not? Discuss the controversies related to taking & metabolizing micronutrient supplements. Written Assignment must include all the information listed to receive maximum credit.
