1) The documentary tests and shakes certain fundamental assumptions about income inequality and aims at initiating a paradigm shift. Extract from the documentary the relevant facts and arguments against the following assumptions: The upper class are job creators. Fighting inequality is class warfare. The economy is a zero-sum game. The economy is also a natural force independent of politics and policies. Globalization and technology have reduced the number of jobs available to Americans. Widening income inequality is inevitable. There is nothing we can do about it. It is capitalism. (2) Discuss these questions according to the documentary: How does the documentary historicize and humanize economics? Why is it important to do so? Why is the status quo of income inequality detrimental to democracy? What is the relationship between upward socioeconomic mobility and public policy? What does our “fat cat” representative in the documentary say about trickle-down and middle-out economics? What has been happening since the late 1970s and early 1980s that changes the historic relationship between economic growth and middle-class wages (i.e. the redistribution patterns of wealth generated by society)? (3) Make screencaps of the documentary and intersperse them in your posts to illustrate your text. Here are some examples I made (which you may use as well): And here is the link to the documentary, where you can also find the password (yup, that password…): https://www.reddit.com/r/Documentaries/comments/3oeh0o/inequality_for_all_2013_robert_reich_put_the_full/ I have taken out the reading requirement since the documentary itself is condensed enough. However, extra credits will be given to those who effectively connect this documentary with e.g. Freightened: The Real Price of Shipping, graduated sovereignty, parcagii. So do your best
