Jazz has been an instrument of global diplomacy almost since its inception, sending artists to distant lands, who in turn share their “inherently democratic” vernacular music with the world. In this comprehensive exam response, please discuss the use of jazz as an instrument of global diplomacy during the years 1949 – 1971. Be sure to cite specific ensembles and artists who were engaged in this type of activity, as well as any conflicts or challenges they may have found in their efforts. Which countries were targeted for these diplomatic programs and why? What conclusions can you draw from the selection of these nations? Which US government agencies sponsored/instigated these programs and why? Is Jazz an “inherently democratic” music and, if so, how and why? Though your response should focus on this relatively brief period in music history, can you cite any existing programs that feature jazz and other vernacular musics that serve the same or a similar diplomatic purpose? What role can and has music, and Jazz in particular, played in global diplomacy? Is this role similar to, or an extension of, the impact and role that Jazz has had in American culture and society? 7 to 8 sources
