Read: Bishop, pg 28-60 After completing the readings, please write a mini-essay that addresses the following: For Foucault, the role of medicine has developed over the course of history. He maintains that the dead body becomes the normative body and death becomes the fundamental ground of medical knowledge. What do you make of this provocative claim? Thinking back to how you described the role of the nurse in the previous discussion; how does Foucault’s point challenge or support your claims? Your goal is to answer these questions in a lucid mini-essay. Begin with an introductory paragraph in which you clearly state your position. Keep in mind that you must frame your position and discussion through the lens of one of the theories we have studied in the first units of the semester. Next, write a series of body paragraphs in which you make your case, directly citing the readings prove your point. This will necessitate citing some earlier readings that support your lens, though the bulk of your citations should come from the readings for this unit. Finally, complete your essay with a concluding paragraph in which you consider some way of potentially bringing your vision of a just, virtuous society to fruition based on the theory you used in the essay.
