We often hear people express their desire to “Buy American” items only. Perhaps you have advocated for American goods only. From our readings this unit, we learned that society as a whole benefits from FREE TRADE.
DISCUSSION QUESTION:
- Look at the tag on your clothing items (your shirt, shoes, pants, dress, hat etc). Where were these items made? Any “Made in America” items?
- Look inside your pantry at the foods you eat regularly and list the countries where they were imported from.
- What car do you drive? Was it made in America? (Note that many foreign vehicles are manufactured in varying degrees in the U.S. while many automobiles produced by the “Big Three” U.S. auto corporations are manufactured outside the U.S. What makes an automobile an American car?
- List all of the friends and relatives you have who are working for an export industry, or for a foreign-owned firm, or all the foreign-owned firms in your city or town.
- Under what conditions do people advocate for TRADE RESTRICTIONS?
