When juveniles with pre existing mental health conditions are charged as adults, they are housed in the same facilities and receive the same treatment services as adults. This is cause for concern when juveniles don’t learn the same as there older counterparts as they are not as psychologically developed coupled with mental health. Unlike the juvenile justice system which focuses on rehabilitation, the adult justice system is more punitive, thus, for inmates with mental health needs, substandard therapies and treatment services are “the norm.” Subsequently, when released, more crimes are committed due to inadequate treatment and the cycle continues.
