Assignment Instructions In this assignment, you will examine the scope of your mental training plan as it relates to the success of your athletes. From the readings in Module 1 and Module 2, you have enough information to formulate a specific plan to help your athletes reach their full potential. In the first Module, you wrote a bullet point paper about confidence and how you can help your athletes achieve excellence through pursuing success, positive self-talk, visualization and goal setting. You also took a good look at your leadership style and coaching philosophy. Now, add in the information in Module 2 about motivation and fear of failure or in some instances, fear of success. You are capable, at this point in the course, of writing out a mental plan of success for your team and the individuals on your team. This assignment will really make you think about your feelings on the “mental” side of performance. On any given day, you can observe a sporting event or listen to the announcers talk about a particular athlete and you will hear such terms as “confidence,” “attitude,” “commitment,” “burnout,” and “motivation.” You will also hear the negative comments about an athlete if they are not performing on target, such as “what a mental case,” or on a positive note, “it is clear that this athlete really prepares himself mentally for a game.” But rarely will you hear how these athletes should go about increasing their mental skills for performance. This is NOT an easy task! A solid, effective mental training plan must be well thought out, tested, evaluated and proven. This takes time. Unfortunately, when you are just beginning the coaching profession, or in some cases, “thrown into the job,” you have to experiment with various training techniques, including mental training. In these cases, the best thing you can do for your athletes is to consider your decisions carefully and try to predict the effects of these decisions on your athletes overall potential for success. In this assignment, your introduction should contain your experiences in the mental training arena. As in any paper, back-up what you say with quotes or references to our text books or other sources of your own. If you have not coached, or led a group before, you will have to base your introduction off of our readings, experiences from other readings or other sport experiences. Include your theories, experiences or observances of sport, athletes and the “mental” side of performances. The introduction is a general description of your feeling of mental training and performance. Introduce your plan, whether it be simple or complex. But be clear on your theories and ideas. In the body of the paper, you will work off the thesis you created in your introduction. I would suggest writing out an outline of your ideas and categorizing them according to the literature in our texts and your other sources. Then, present your main ideas and examples that support them. You are not required to turn in a bibliography, just refer to sources in your paper. Your conclusion should summarize your paper and include ideas for the future. You could mention that your plan is on-going and is constantly being evaluated and assessed according to the needs of your athletes. Or state how effective you see your plan relative to your athletes future performances. Be creative! The field of sports psychology is relatively new, so you will have to carefully plan and research this paper. The paper should be 12 font, double-spaced, two pages, about 600 words.
