When you read Oedipus the King, find the answers to the following questions. Make sure to take notes as you read. For a passing grade, the answer to each question needs to include an excerpt from Oedipus the King illustrating your point, followed by an explanation of why this excerpt serves as an answer to the question. The answer needs to include a reference to Oedipus the King that makes it possible for me to locate the excerpt you have chosen. You will submit this assignment as one single Word document on Canvas. Assignment Part 1 (70 points) According to Greek philosopher Aristotle, Sophocles’s Oedipus the King is the perfect example of a Greek tragedy. Aristotle’s seven criteria for what makes a tragedy are based on this play. Identify the seven criteria of what makes a tragedy according to Aristotle as stated in the Power Point presentation Tragedy and the Tragic Hero. Remember to include examples from the play, as well as an explanation of why you have chosen these particular examples to illustrate your point. Assignment Part 2 (30 points) Not only does Aristotle claim that Oedipus the King is the perfect example of a Greek tragedy, he also claims that Oedipus himself is a perfect example of a tragic hero. However, an alternative reading of Oedipus the King shows that there is a case to be made for Jocasta also being a tragic hero. Choose at least three of the criteria of what makes a tragic hero as stated in the Power Point presentation Tragedy and the Tragic Hero and apply them to Jocasta as a character in Sophocles’s play. Remember to include examples from the play as well as an explanation of why you have chosen these particular examples to illustrate your point.
