The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with practical experience exploring the concept of personal privacy, or lack thereof, in cyberspace. Students will write a paper (excluding title page and references) on their investigation of two topics. First, students will input their name into a search engine (e.g., Google©) with minimal other identifying information. Students will then describe the information that is found (e.g., age, photos, address, phone numbers, banking, social network profiles, shopping profiles, etc.) and whether it was about them. Second, students will use any cyber methods they can devise to find information on the course instructor (Bryce). Students will then write a short narrative that describes Bryce’s life, based on whatever information was found. Finally, students will reflect on what information was found (in both searches) and how it may change (or not) the way they approach personal privacy when in cyberspace.
