You will be asked to write a short essay (maximum word limit: 750 words) about one key idea/concept/technique from the course that you applied to your SLE project. Further details about how your short individual paper will be graded are found in the short individual paper grading rubric located at the end of this syllabus. below We have been through a long, exhausting but also rewarding journey together where you have learned the functional and cross-functional skills required to effectively and efficiently run a wide variety of organizations (small/large; public/private; and for profit/not-for-profit). We have explored, over the past three semesters, the dynamic tasks of opportunity ideation, feasibility, launch and growth/value capture – what we have referred to as building the “entrepreneurial mindset” or managing “entrepreneurship of all kinds” – with the ultimate goal of equipping you with the skills needed to longitudinally create both economic and social value for a wide range of stakeholders in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and beyond. This course can be viewed and will be taught as one giant practicum where you build competencies in integrating all the knowledge disciplines and skill sets referred to above that you have learned thus far in the program. The course in fact is an extension of your strategic management course (MGT513) that provided you with the theoretical frameworks, tools, and techniques of how to create such a synthesis that produces a winning strategy leading an organization to competitive excellence. Our Capstone course is the applied side to that course. It is based primarily on a complex business simulation called the capstone business simulation. The capstone business simulation thrusts you into the hurly burly world of an organization where you have to make decisions with others on actual data (sometimes fragmented and ambiguous as in real life) requiring you to align all your business functions from R&D to sales in a manner where your team can outwit its competitors, delight its customers, and generate large profits that can be sustained over time to please its shareholders. This entails you to deploy your entire managerial toolkit from production forecasting techniques to motivating yourself and your group members to put in the extra effort to win the competitive race. As a result, you will come to further tease out and appreciate in a direct experiential fashion the multiple often times competing interconnections that exist within the various business functions, how they interact with each other as well as with dynamic, external market conditions, and the premium that it places on organizational leadership to develop the requisite skills of synthesizing and integrating all these disparate forces and elements from product design to promotion budgets into novel configurations (i.e., new strategies and business models) that to quote Steve Jobs, “create a ding in the universe”. By the time you complete this simulation, you will also become even more aware of the importance of having “soft” skills in leadership and strategy making particularly in the areas of self-awareness, decision making involving judgment relying often on “small” qualitative rather than “big” quantitative data, and managing relationships. The last part of the course will thus consist of a workshop that takes a hard look at the soft side of leadership and management where you will learn practical, actionable skills in these above mentioned areas (e.g., collecting and analyzing soft data) that have been gestured but not fully explored in other parts of your program.
