Length: 1000-1100 words maximum, double-spaced (include word count) Bibliography: 5 sources (see below) Instructions: In Paper 1, you will be writing about the history dimension of your research topic. You will have to trace the settlement history of your ethnic group in Canada (its history of immigration). You should focus only on the major phases of you group’s immigration (waves of mass migration) recent history… part 40 years. To write your paper, it must include: Introduction : Your introduction should contain a clear statement of purpose (the topic of your Paper: Chinese Canadians). You should also announce what major points you will be investigating and writing about in the body of your paper (i.e., which historical waves of immigration). The purpose of Paper 1 will be primarily informative and explanatory; it will provide the historical background of your subject. A thesis, therefore, is not required. Body : The body of your paper should be organized into 3-4 major divisions (paragraphs). Each should focus on a different phase of immigration (TWO WAVES). Provide a title at the head of each division (a short descriptive phrase taken from your outline). In writing the body of your paper, you will be tracing historical events. Your paragraphs should narrate the subject’s history by showing process (how did certain situations arise?), as well as causes and effects (why are things the way they are?). Conclusion : In your conclusion, you should re-state your research question, and summarize the major points of your paper. To inform your paper, you must use 5 sources (from Lab #1): 4 scholarly sources: journal articles or books (at least 1 of each) 1 specialized encyclopedia article (the relevant section of your group entry in the Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples) Be sure to reference your sources by using in-text citation every time you present research information and material that you have borrowed from the sources you have used. On a separate page (at the end of your paper), you must include a List of Works Cited. It should contain only the sources you’ve actually cited in your paper. Use the MLA Documentation Style to present your citations and Works Cited List. You can use the Dawson Library website for guidelines on citing sources.
