In a discussion post, answer the following question: should we accept Rule-Utilitarianism and, if so, why? In your answer, clearly articulate what Rule-Utilitarianism is, and how it differs from Act-Utilitarianism. If you believe that Rule-Utilitarianism is a promising position, show how it provides an answer to at least one of the objections raised against Utilitarianism (as presented in chapter eight of Rachels’ book). Your answer might even involve answering some the concerns raised against Rule-Utilitarianism itself. If you believe that Rule-Utilitarianism is not a promising position, make a case for why this is so (providing arguments, when appropriate). Make sure to provide thoughtful reasons behind your response. This will likely involve you using the basics of deductive logic (provided in the Vaughn reading, Chapter 2); and it will surely involve you attending to Rachel’s measured treatment of the issues.
