Your essays: • Must have a clear, effective thesis statement that shapes and focuses your writing. • Are expected to be clear, well organized and respond to the questions asked. Before the exam, consider your argument and how you will structure the essay so you can write with clarity. These are broad topics – you will not have time to develop everything. Be specific in your ideas and examples. • Are expected to draw in materials from throughout the course. While you should focus on the topics assigned (and readings noted) you should also incorporate points of intersection and divergence between materials. • Will be marked on content and stylistic elements, and your ability to construct an argument, appeal to examples and draw your own conclusions. • Are NOT opportunities to ‘rant’ but to thoughtfully present your ideas and engage course materials. Be sure to support your ideas with materials from the course.
