Interactions between patients and professional can be influenced, and complicated, by factors such as gender and social class. Let’s consider the case that we focused on in the first discussion in this module from this perspective.
Consider the case from M6D1 (Discussion One) as you answer the following questions:
1.The physician was a male and the patient was a female. What gender dynamics may have been in play?
2.The gender of the nurse was not specified. If the nurse had been a female, how might this have influenced the conversation? If the nurse had been male?
3.The patient in this scenario was a writer. If she had been a laborer, without a specific professional goal in mind, how do you think this might have impacted the decision-making process?
4.If the patient had a partner or other family member who was actively involved in the decision-making process, do you think the power dynamics would have changed in any way? If so, how?
