Initiation, the first phase in the project management framework, is about starting up the project. In the absence of initiation, projects will not mobilize, let alone deliver results. Project results depend on the expectations and collaboration of diverse stakeholders who are across the globe. This section will impart the ways of thinking and practices project managers need to solicit and align diverse stakeholder expectations and develop team charters for high-functioning project teams.

Develop Project Charter is the process of developing a document that formally authorizes the existence of a project and provides the project manager with the authority to apply organizational resources to project activities (PMI, 2017). A good place to start creating a functional virtual team culture is with a chartering activity. According to Fisher (2011), “the written team charter document is less important than the discussion it represents” (p. 68). This section will impart ways of thinking and practices project managers need to develop a team charter effectively by incorporating team-centric and culturally diverse ideas.

Identify Stakeholders is the process of identifying project stakeholders regularly and analyzing and documenting relevant information regarding their interests, involvement, interdependencies, influence, and potential impact on project success. (PMI, 2017). It is crucial to understand stakeholder needs and requirements, it is essential to build rapport – and this requires empathy and understanding of differences in cultures (Reed, 2013). This section will impart ways of thinking and practices project managers need to effectively navigate and adapt to the new culturally diverse stakeholder landscape.
