Unknown by many, the “Healthy People” initiative began in the 1970’s with the Surgeon General’s Report “Healthy People: The Surgeon General’s Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention” and has evolved over several decades. The Healthy People initiative uses the data gathered from the U.S. Census, which occurs every 10 years, and other sources to create realistic health goals for the population.

  1. Identify two (2) types of surveillance systems used in the United States and describe how they impact the goals of public health initiatives like Healthy People.
  2. Is data confidentiality guaranteed by the data collection and surveillance systems? If so, how?
  3. Is it reasonable to base the goals of Healthy People on data accumulated from surveillance systems? Why or why not?
  4. In your opinion, how do you feel the U.S. can improve its health statistics data collection systems?
