Each student will write a 10-12 pages research paper approved by me focusing on an American government issue. The research paper is intended to assist you to critically and thoroughly focus on one issue, president, governmental agency or policy related to American government. You may select a single issue, administration, political action committee or foreign policy issue as the focus of the research paper. First, a descriptive review of how the issue effects the country’s economic, political, security and social development potential. Additionally, you must consider how politics (interest groups, debt, violence, education, tax reform, etc.) constrain or enhance the chosen country’s domestic and or international position. Second, the paper will critically review the policies and actually pursued by the selected administration, Congress or the courts. To what degree have these policies affected the American society? How successful were they in achieving their goals? What should the future strategy (ies) guiding future presidents, members of Congress or political parties in the future? As an example, assume that you are a senior advisor to the president. The president has tasked you with writing a position paper on supporting a friendly candidate, nation or region or punishing an unfriendly aggressor or political foe. What would your policy be and why? Your paper should be ten to twelve double-spaced pages in length not including the title and work-cited pages) with a minimum of 6 sources. The paper must do three things: (1) explaining the policy of a certain president, member of Congress or political party; (2) explain current status of the issue in American politics; (3) present a defense/justification for your position and how that would advance the president’s overall agenda. The research paper must be typed in no larger than 12 fonts, and double-spaced. The paper must have a Works Cited Page with a minimum of six print sources (no electronic sources) according to APA or MLA style and a cover page that includes the title, student’s name, course and section.
