Topic 6 – Identity politics
“We desire to be recognised as legitimate and competent actors, a practical orientation in time and space which is not captured by the emphasis on ‘categorical’ identities” (Noble, 2009, pg. 880).
• Drawing from this quote, critically discuss Noble’s (2009) work on recognition, drawing on
examples to highlight the new forms of identity expression prevalent in post-modernity.
“The refusal to be seen as one thing is not simply a desire to be read as whole, but also a way
of resisting the pressure to collude with the universal” (Aliahomed, 2010, pg.158)
• Drawing from this quote, critically discuss how intersectionality impacts on the ways in
which identity is understood and performed, drawing on at least 2 identity categories
(E.g. Gender & Ethnicity OR Sexuality & Race OR Class & Gender or any other
combinations).
Topic 7 – Global poverty
• Critically examine how globalisation contributes to global inequality and poverty,
providing suggestions for how this can be resolved on both a macro and micro level.
